Mallard Creek’s Brunswick Stew Recipe?

We are proud of the heritage and quality of our stew, in fact we got loads of compliments every year.  It’s always an early sellout, we just can’t make enough – it’s a multiday process and involves over 100 folks to cook and package the stew.  Occasionally we get questions and comments about the inclusion of rice in the stew.  Our Brunswick Stew recipe has been passed down for many generations in our Church – and it is a stew – not a soup.  Like barbecue, stews are very personal and regional in taste and recipe. We are very proud of our stew, and let us assure you that the inclusion of rice is original to the recipe – and has not been added to stretch the recipe.  On the practical side, some stews have potatoes – but don’t store/freeze/reheat well, your Mallard Creek Stew will not break down as much, since the rice holds better.  While we don’t share specific recipes, we cook our own mix of chicken, beef and pork for the stew – and there is approximately 6 times as much meat vs rice (by weight) in each serving of stew.  The meat is finely ground after cooking, so sometimes folks don’t realize it.  By the way, we use a gluten free rice too! Remember that stews were intended to be a cost-effective source of nutrition, in their origin. We appreciate your own personal taste, feel free to come enjoy our stew, barbecue, slaw and fellowship.  We would love to have you!

Gulten Free?
Yes. It appears we have no gluten-containing ingredients. Converted rice, according to Uncle Ben’s, has no gluten. But since our food supply changes from year to year and it’s brand specific we only know we’re good for this year (2018.)

We do have bread on the tables, and our sandwiches are on traditional buns.

Who do I contact?

We do not accept Debit Cards.
We do, however, accept cash and Visa/Master Card.

Who comes to this Barbecue?
Our guests come from all over… and we’ll serve over 15,000!

  2. Hello, I notice many folks are passing out flyers. Are businesses allowed to pass out a business card or is it limited to candidates trying to get elected? Please advise, thank you!

    • Thanks for your inquiry, but we limit this activity to the political arena. It can be a great opportunity for you to meet candidates to help you decide how you might vote.

    • Richard has passed the baton to his son, Rusty and his wife… and they learned from the best! So glad you come and enjoy the Brunswick stew with us at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church!

  3. This was our first time visiting your event. We have been really missing out. The stew was the best we have ever tasted. It is amazing what your organization is able to do for this one day event. We will certainly mark this on our calendar each year. See you in 2016. Ken and Suzanne

    • No delivery. However, you can send a runner who can get your food without having to get out of the car… we have four take-out/drive-through lines. For a large order (say 50 places) please call ahead and we’ll have it ready when you arrive. Hope you can make it… Thursday, October 27.

  4. Does the Brunswick Stew last through the afternoon or is there a possibility of running out? I must schedule correctly to make sure I have enough to last until next year! I just finished my last quart last month.

    Thanks,
    Debbie

    • Debbie, while the Brunswick Stew is typically the first to sell out, we generally to have until at least 4pm, sometimes later.
I hope this will help you schedule your arrival!

  5. Recently relocated to Charlotte and happen to catch this event last year. Just would like to say good is delicious and people very friendly, had a great time looking forward to attending tomorrow:)

  6. I was disappointed with the “Brunswick stew”. There were no lima beans, no potatoes, only a few kernels of corn, but lots and lots of rice. I am from Virginia and know what Brunswick stew is. Thanks.

    • WE don’t have any dedicated bicycle parking, but certainly would welcome your attendance. Can you lock the bike? I suggest you contact Bill Wood, one of our co-chairmen (704-756-0943) to get more details.

    • I wish I could promise that, but last year we sold out by 5:30PM… If there is any way you can come earlier, I would recommend it.
Or if you have a friend you could send on a mission for you.. I do hope you’ll make it.

    • Checked two of the local television stations. I don’t see anything about a spill this morning. The BBQ takes place at the Community House which is located on Mallard Creek Road. (Not Mallard Creek CHURCH Road.) The best way to get to the Community House is I-485 to Exit 28… then West on Mallard Creek Road. The Community House is about a mile from the Exit.

  7. The 2018 BB-Q is on Thursday, 10-25-18, correct? Will it be possible to pre-order on that day and pick up during the day?

    • Yes, the Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church Barbecue is on Thursday, October 25, 2018.
And also, you may call in your order. 704-547-0038
I would suggest that you call before noon. Last year we ran out of Brunswick stew very early.
      Thank you for supporting us!

  8. This was my first time experiencing your bbq.. it was delicious!! However, when I got back to work, I realized I was missing two sandwiches, which I paid for. That made me very sad because there is no way I am going to go wait in that line over an hour again. BK pulled my order, you may ask him to start double checking the orders before handling out orders. Thank you for putting all the hard work in!!
