 89th Annual Mallard Creek Barbecue

Mallard Creek to Host 89th Annual Barbecue on Oct. 25

Organizers to prepare 14,600 pounds of barbecue in anticipation of up to 20,000 people

CHARLOTTE, NC (Oct. 17, 2018) – Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church’s Annual Barbecue on Oct. 25 is so much more than the average church fundraiser. Now in its 89th year, the “granddaddy of barbecues” is steeped in history and longtime traditions, with displays of volunteerism, community partnerships and generations of families working side-by-side.

Church staff, members, friends and volunteers throughout the community will devote a week of hard work to prepare. Event organizers expect to cook 14,600 pounds of pork barbecue, prepare 2,500 gallons of Brunswick stew, shred two tons of coleslaw, brew 400 gallons of coffee and entertain close to 20,000 people.

On Oct. 18-19, 14,600 pounds of barbecue will be cooked, chopped, seasoned and packaged. On Oct. 20, ingredients for two tons of slaw will be shredded, combined, seasoned and packaged into 55-gallon barrels and cooled. On Oct. 22-23, ingredients (chicken, pork, beef, rice and vegetables) for 2,500 gallons of Brunswick stew will be prepared.

Serving starts at 10 a.m. Oct. 25 and continues until sold out, typically around 6 p.m. There will be four drive-thru take-out lines in operation. Complimentary coffee will be served for guests eating on-site. Group orders of 50 plates or more can be accommodated with call-ahead ordering to the take-out stand.

The event will be held at the Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church Community House, 11400 Mallard Creek Road, Charlotte, NC 28262. For more information, visit www.mallardcreekbbq.com or call 704-547-0038.

About the Mallard Creek Barbecue

The Annual Mallard Creek Barbecue has been a Charlotte tradition since 1929. The church was under construction building Sunday school rooms when the nation fell into the Great Depression. Unable to pay the contractor, the deacons hosted a barbecue to raise the money. Today, funds raised are used to make contributions to local and world missions and supplement the church’s building fund. For more information, visit www.mallardcreekbbq.com.

Media Opportunities

A limited number of promotional tickets are available to the media. Volunteers are devoting an entire week to prepare for the event. Space is available on-site for live television and radio remotes (morning, midday and afternoon). Media tours, interviews and photo opportunities are available during any of the prep days.

  1. Please tell me when the food is served (Starting and ending time) and when can I talk to the politicians in attendance.

    Thanks,

    William Beverly

    • We begin serving at 10AM and continue until we sell out, usually between 530PM and 630PM. Many political candidates take advantage of the opportunity to meet and greet voters at our event. Most candidates or their representatives are at the Community House for the lunch time (perhaps 11am – 1pm) although there will some candidates and/or their representatives on site throughout the day. Thank you for your interest in the Mallard Creek BBQ!
